Forwarding all downloaded files automatically to USB instead of HDD

Hi all, new owner of a 2014 MBP 13 inch 128GB.

I was wondering if it would be possible to set up my mac so all files I download off the internet could be routed to automatically be saved into a USB drive if connected? My mac has a relatively small HDD/SSD (128gb) I am unsure of which exactly. So i bought a 128GB flash drive to match it and keep my computer clean and fast. I understand that all files may not be best to be saved onto a flash drive but I use my MBP mostly for school and I am an Accounting major so I really acquire a lot of word and exec files that i don't want cluttering up my computer.

Yes, you can do that. Assuming you're using Safari, open Safari Preferences, click on the General Tab. You'll see a section that says "Save downloaded files to". Here's where you'll enter your flash drive information. A bit of warning, however. Most programs such as MS Office or any of the iWork apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) will default to installing on your Macintosh HD. (your internal HD)

I don't believe you're going to be saving much space that way. You can put all your data files (Word, etc), photos, music, and so forth on the flash drive. That will save space but you must have the flash drive plugged in at all times in order to access the data.
