Too many beach balls--slow performance

I have a 6-year-old Mac desktop with 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, upgraded to 4 GB ram. Performance was slowing so I put in the increased RAM and that helped until I installed Mavericks. Now it is really slow--often stopping while I watch the spinning "beach ball." Any help out there?
