Hmmm…do I need to get out my crystal ball to attempt to answer this??;) Not much info given.:(

Could be a:

- catastrophic hardware failure (very unlikely)
- volume is turned all the way down or muted (possible)
- computer was dropped
- liquid spill (??)
- etc.

Add to what Nick said the headphone jack may be stuck sometimes a simple plug and unplug will remedy the headphone jack look into headphone port and make sure there is not a red glow (optical input enabled).

Your idea regarding the audio jack. Who the heck knows if the OP's friend has children…and something got jammed in the jack.

This is the sort of "crazy" theories;) we can come up with when we have so little info to go on.
