Oh ok. How do I do that? And what if I still can't install ? Then I'm left with a blank disk

Ok hopefully you have a backup of your files. Anyway, when the mavericks install starts at the top of the screen is a menu bar. Click on utilities and select disk utility. Under disk utility select on the left side the name of your hard drive. On the right side you will see selections appear.....first aid...erase...raid...restore. Select erase. Make sure under format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is selected and you can name your hard drive if you want. Click on erase. When that is done close the window by clicking in the left corner the red x ball and it will take you back to the install window. Click continue and all should be well ;D
