After successfully installing on my iMac I tried to install on my wife's. The progress bar remained blank. After an hour or so I tried to turn it off or restart but touching any key, including power button, produced a bleep. Eventually I unplugged it and restarted. Installation then went ahead normally.

What could have caused the problem in the first place?

Who knows...? Could have been anything from a disk glitch to moving data when it stalled, but as long as the installation completed when you restarted, it should be OK. I've had that happen to me once before when installing Mountain Lion. I noticed that the 10.9.2 installation took longer to verify itself and finally install than most updates that I have previously done.
