I have an older (2007) mac laptop that needs a replacement hard drive (it just died from exhaustion).

The dead one is a Seagate ST9120822AS, with a part # 9S1133-042.

I am having a tough time to find a replacement with the same part number, but can find replacements with a slight change in part numbers (-020, etc....). These variations are from different types of computers (PC and not stated as mac).

Any suggestions on how to best replace the beat up hard drive is appreciated.

You don't need an exact replacement hard drive. Any SATA 2.5" laptop hard drive under 750gig will fit just fine. These are very very easy to find.:)

You do not need the same part number, nor even the same brand of drive.

You can use any SATA 2.5" drive 9.5mm in height - which is just about all of them.
Get the largest, fastest drive you can afford.
Personally, with hard drives, I still recommend the WD Black drives.

You're also going to need your original boot discs or a bootable USB drive with 10.7 or later if you were running that to reinstall OS X unless you have a bootable clone backup.

Replacement

Thanks for the responses.... great news to hear. Much easier to find something verses the exact replacement.
