itunes transfer to ext. harddrive

Quit iTunes.

I would use SuperDuper! or CCC - whichever one you have - to clone from one external to the other vs just copying.

After the cloning is done and you verify the data is transferred, the old drive is disconnected from your computer, then rename the new external to match that of the old one. Then when you open iTunes, it shouldn't have any issue with the location of your library.
