Hi I just bought a sony HD eg5 external drive. I see it in the Finder but I cannot drag or paste archives to it. It doesn't give me the past option. You think I need to reformat the external disk??. How??can you help??

The Sony disk is formatted to NTFS which is a Microsoft proprietary file system. Your Mac can read from it but not write to it. So yes, you should format it with Disk Utility to the MacOS Journaled File System (HFS+). If you need to use the hard drive for both a Mac and a PC let us know.

Yes is in NTFS. I don't have the option "MacOS Journaled File System (HFS+)" that you mention. The list includes : Mac OS plus with register, MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT. Which I choose?
Thanks for your reply

Are you sure you saw Mac OS plus with register? You don't want MS DOS or exFAT if you're only going to be using the drive with your Mac.

OK, I understand now, you're not using an English version of OS X.

Choose this one: Mac Os plus(with register)

Ok works well. Thanks a lot
However when I create a new fold and try to drag files into it , the original files doesn't get deleted just copy the files into the new folder. In fact doesn't work like in the computer. How would you go about it

Texas, where else?

Holding the command key while dragging and dropping to an external will move it instead of copying it.

Personally, I don't recommend "moving" anything.
I always recommend "copy", then verify, then delete the original.
