I have read in various forums of the need to retain boot discs - but I don't have any, since my iMac doesn't have a disc drive (27" iMac late 2012). If I ever had a problem needing such discs, what should I do (I not technically very literate, as you can see).

What operating system are you running? 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9?
Which one came with your computer?

Your 27" iMac late 2012 never shipped with install DVD's. If you ever need to install ALT CMD R keyboard commands will download your original installer direct from Apple. It shipped with Mountain Lion pre installed.

Craig, I am running 10.9, but I think from memory the machine came with 10.6...

Late 2012 iMac's came with OS 10.8.2. Wayyy newer than 10.6.;)
