Hello - now I do not have an iPhone (son & his wife have the newest ones and have used the fingerprint feature successfully), but there have been reports of problems w/ the technology - check this Forbes Discussion from October of last year - good luck! Dave :)

Do you have your iPhone 5S in any sort of case that might interfere with the fingerprint ID? If it begins to consistently fail, you should take it to your nearest Apple Store and have them look at it and help you resolve it. You are well within the first year of warranty and they might deem replacement is the best course of action for you..

It's a feature built into the phone and entirely out of the end user control. So it either works consistently or not. If you have a case or anything else blocking the sensor, then you can do something about it. But if that isn't the case here, then you really have not many things to do other than hopefully get it replaced by the Apple store..

FWIW...I think sometimes if you have really dry skin (dry fingertips) this can affect the "quality" of the fingertip recognition. I'm not just talking with electronic items…but other "touch" items as well…such as light switches, dimmer switches, etc.

Is there an Apple store near you? If so, visit them.

The fingerprint identifier in the new 5s has been problematic for lots of folks. Macworld magazine did an article on it in their last issue. Even the editors had problems with it. As a matter of fact, many folks have totally given up on using it and have simply gone back to using the PIN number instead. Maybe it'll work better in the iPhone 6. ;)

Have you upgraded to iOS 7.1, which specifically mentions a solution for this issue?
