Brand new iMac x2 crashes

Hi friends,

I bought a new iMac a few weeks back. It kept crashing, so I took it back to the store. Something must have been seriously wrong , beyond repair, because they had to order another one for me.

This iMac (3,2 Ghz, 16 RAM, 3 TB) arrived Friday. The first thing that happened when I turned it on was the alarm sounding, because the RAM wasn’t properly installed. I had to take it all out and put them back in (never opened a computer before). I am only mentioning this, I do not think it has anything to do with the several crashes I have had during this weekend. They are not as frequent as they were with the first machine, but still. It turns itself of with no warning, goes into shell-mode (?) with a grey message in about 8 languages that something unexpected forced the machine to shut down (not the exact phrasing).

I am really losing fate in this product. This is not what I expect from a brand new (and very expensive) Apple-computer. I think I already have spent more time, money (transporting) and frustration on it than one can reasonably expect, even if one is unlucky sometimes. My work is lagging behind (I’m a writer/photographer). The machine doesn’t seem to be have been tested properly before it was sent to the market. Other small frustrations, like the migration assistant not working, I could have lived with (connected by thunderbolt, the iMac does recognize the source, a quite new MacBookPro, but after ca. 5 minutes, when the iMac can see the CONTENT of the MacBook, it disconnects immediately, and cannot get in touch anymore).
But I can not live with the fact that it turns itself of/crashes like this, for no apparent reason and without any warning.

I am not a computer-guy. The content of the crash-report means absolutely nothing to me. But maybe one of you guys can help. I would be very grateful

You should take it back to the shop and request another computer.
This looks like something is wrong with a hardware component.
Knowing Apple, they will support you in this and will give you a new machine.

Ok, thank you. Will do. Or if I can: get my money back. Going through this process 3 times is not very tempting. To buy a new computer that is actually working should not be like buying a lottery-ticket or something. M

What java application are you running?

And did you install the latest version of java?

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that question, Bobtomay (know of course that Java is a program, but do not see it under programs, am pretty computer illiterate, as you probaly have figured out already). But I did all the program-updates before I started working. Including Mavericks, as told (my older MacBookPro actually had a NEWER operating-system than my brand new iMac, found that strange)

Not really strange at all. What has probably happened is that your other machine had been updated with the newest OS update (10.9.1). The new Mac has whatever OS was current at the time it shipped to the store. Given that it may have sat in the store for several weeks before purchase it's entirely possible that an OS update was released during that time and would not have been installed by the store.

Ok, fair enough Slydude. Still, this is the new iMacs, and I read somewhere that they were supposed to come with the new operation system, as both were introduced in October last year

Apple is aware that this happens and has a remedy. In the past, when the OS was over $100 U.S. they had a policy where you qualified for a free update if the Mac was purchased within so many weeks/months of the new OS being announced.

Since Mavericks was distributed for free you, should be able to simply log into the App Store and download it at no cost. No point doing that though until the crashing issue is resolved.

The Java error BSD message may just be coincidental, it's hard to tell. What I would be more concerned about is the fact that the memory modules were not seated properly which is why you got the "beeping" sound when the iMac was first turned on. The crashing could actually be caused by bad memory or intermittent memory.

I agree with member McBie, I would take it back to Apple and have them replace it once again. But this time, make them check the new machine out at the store before they release it to you. I know a 27" iMac is not exactly easy to carry, but fortunately the new iMacs are much lighter than the older models.

Is this a Stock machine out of the Box or was the Memory (RAM) Upgraded before you fired it up and got the beeps and then crashes?

It was upgraded from 8 to 16 RAM Dennis. Just had another crash

Then my suspicion is that one of the memory modules is malfunctioning.
Suggest to take it back to the shop and ask for a new machine.

Can I ask, who installed the 16GB RAM? What Shop did this and what brand is the RAM?

Within the thirty day of purchase? Ring Apple Support and complain bitterly.

Yeah, I am thinking you may not have the right RAM installed there, or it has been installed incorrectly.

The ram issue occurred to me as well. It's also entirely possible that the ram which was installed is the correct module but faulty. Years ago she I purchased my G5 (from mail order vender) I began experiencing regular crashes within the first two weeks.

Initially I suspected that the machine did not have enough memory since it usually crashed when iMovie was open. I didn't suspect bad memory initially because everything passed the Apple Hardware Test. Eventually someone suggested I run MemTest. The test reported a failure within minutes.

Dtravis7, McBie, Slydude and Chas m: You were totally on the right track, it seems. I was just informed by the service center (Oslo, Norway) that they have found what must be the reason for the malfunction, on this and the previous iMac I had from them. This model or production-line, and only this (27' late 2013) can not run properly on 1,5 V ram. It needs 1,35 V ram. Apple had apparantly not informed them about this.
Hope my problems are finally over. Thank you so much for your help.
