Hello - you're need to provide more information: 1) What Mac to you own (Model, Type, Year)?; 2) OS X installed (I'm assuming 10.9.1 from a post you left a month ago)?; 3) How is your Western Digital drive formatted, i.e. NTFS, FAT32, or OS X (extended journaled)?; and 4) What are your trying to do w/ the external HD and what specific issues are you having? Dave

The Western Digital Passport model external hard drives are pre-formatted at the factory to NTFS. I just purchased a USB 3.0 model for my iMac. It will have to be re-formatted to the Mac OS Extended Journaled format in order to use it for Time Machine or with cloning software. You can re-format it to FAT-32 just for file storage, but that file system is not recommended because it's non journaled and limited to a single file max size of around 4 GB.

Yeppers, sort of hard for us to know exactly what to advise unless you tell us the issues.

Error code 5 is a disk read - write error. It's either occurring on your hard drive that you're trying to backup or on the Passport. It's very likely your internal hard drive that has problems.

Run a verify and repair on your internal hard drive to see if you can clear up the error before trying to use Time Machine again.

I would also disconnect all the cables from the HDD. Reboot your computer a couple of times and then reconnect all the cables then try the operation again. That might just solve the issue. If not continue on with the verify and repair process.
