I have an old white MacBook from 2008 which only has 1Gb of RAM. Just wondering when I buy more RAM does it need to be a specific type on RAM to work on a MacBook? ie do I need to buy it from Apple?

Thanks Nick. I'm in the Uk so will find a UK supplier that I can get it from.

Wondering if you can help - my MacBook identifier is MacBook4,1 Do you know what the maximum I can upgrade it to? Is it 4Gb?

To the best of my knowledge...Crucial has a UK based warehouse. Here's the Crucial UK website:

Crucial.com/uk

The MacBook 4,1's can actually be upgraded to 6gig...but the 6gig upgrades are much more pricey. A 4gig upgrade is definitely doable...and more affordable.:)

Sorry Nick, one more thing. Does is matter if I get DDR2 or DDR3? What's the difference?

Get the ram that the Crucial website points you to (using the "Crucial Memory Advisor Tool"). When I do this...it only gives DDR2 options.

You're welcome! That 4gig ram upgrade will definitely make your MacBook feel more "zippy"!:)

Just to add, if you have a stock hard drive in there now would be a good time to swap it out too (since you'll already have her opened up). Larger amount of free space won't make a big difference, but if your current HDD is 5400rpm, you'll notice the difference stepping up to 7200rpm. That's what I did with my 2008 MBP - RAM and HDD at the same time.
