I retrofit to 10.6.8
Now mail won't work, and I can't seem to download an older Mail.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

You do not download mail. It is part of the operating system on the DVD. What DVD do you have? If none purchase from Apple Online for $20.00.

joining the forum.

retrofit 10.6.8 after trying Mavericks, which slowed my 7-yr-old iMac.

Now can't get at iPhoto, mail, Facetime, etc. Did I make a colossal mistake?

Can I go back to Mavericks if I get more memory?

should I buy the new iMac to get faster processing, etc.?

To get things going, what are the specs of your iMac?

You don't need to buy a newer machine just to get Mail working (unless of course you want a newer machine). When you say that you can't download an older mail, are you talking about the application itself or are you trying to download old emails? If the former, you shouldn't need to download old copies since the version that comes with the OS was designed to work with it.

Was there some change in the mailbox format between Snow Leopard and Mavericks that could be causing an issue? I thought I remembered seeing a message similar to that somewhere along the way.

If everything was done through IMAP, all should be fine since, in that case, Mail just interfaces with the mail server.

The problem the OP is having is that Mavericks needs more than 2GB of RAM. More RAM (memory) would likely fix the issue on his machine.

Downgrading back to Snow Leopard was probably done incorrectly, leaving behind apps that no longer work. Upgrading back to Mavericks (after maxing out his RAM) should fix things.

Perhaps but Mavericks is spec'd to work with 2GB and memory issues may not be why Mail doesn't work. Regardless, yes, running an OS with the bare minimum is not going to be fun for anyone involved.

Thanks all. I updated to 4 GB ram, and reloaded Mavericks. My local guru suggested using Mozilla Thunderbird until Mavericks gets their (mail) act together. Seems to work. Lots of security functions I'm unaccustomed to.

Nothing against Thunderbird, but Mavericks Mail works fine. Lots of bugs wrt Gmail and Exchange handling squashed with 10.9.2.
