Spinning beach ball

In every application my iMac OS X v10.7.5 the beach ball of death hangs out for many seconds. I can't accomplish work. How do I stop this?

How do I stop the spinning beach ball of death(SBBOD)? It shows up in every program I use: email, excel, internet, word, acad, etc. What is the procedure for removing this mishap?

Not sufficient hard drive space. Not sufficient memory. Aging computer with slow processors. Hard to tell with so little detail of operating system and Mac model. See Pigoo's response to your other thread. Moderators not keen on double posting.
