You're going to get answers that are all over the place. Especially when you are talking about laptop computers which can be exposed to all sorts of abuse while being carried/transported around.

For the most part…Apple computers are very reliable.

And the bottom line is…if you want to use an Apple computer/Mac OS…you have to purchase an Apple computer (whether it's reliable or not).

My MB Pro was purchased in late 2008 and it is still going strong. It has been my primary Mac since then and on daily. Sometimes I will go several days without turning the machine off or rebooting. In all that time I have done the following:

1. Replaced the battery
2. Upgraded memory to 8 GB
3. Replaced the hard drive twice. Once because I needed a larger drive and once because I dropped the drive onto a tile floor 3 times in the same day.

My numbers may not be representative though. I use it like a desktop machine and don't travel with it too much anymore.

My '09 MBP is still going strong. Everything original. Although it rarely leaves the house, I let no one else use it, and liquids stay far away.

I did the memory upgrade about a year ago and had no problem with installation. I noticed some improvement in performance. Maybe not as much as I expected but then again I got a pretty good deal on the memory so it worked out well all around. You will need the right sized screwdriver. The only problem I had was some of the screws are quite small and It can be a pain holding them in place to start them. Most folks do it with little problem I'm a bit clumsy. The battery and hard drive installations were dead simple.

You might find these installation videos helpful. Select your Mac model from the list and you get a good idea of the installation procedure. I believe the video also indicates the types/sizies of any tools needed.

Am still using the 2nd gen MBP produced - from late '06 - so I don't know yet how long I'll be able to use it. Although, since it can't be upgraded beyond 10.7, it likely will be as long as 10.7 is able to perform what I need to do on it.

Don't really have a clue what you mean by "without any service".

My very first MacBook Pro, I bought in Sept 09, I've now sold to a friend of mine, but that lasted me around 5 years. I had the battery changed, the hard drive was changed and I also upgraded the memory myself without issue. I now have a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and haven't had any issues so far

Very nice. I have done/do all of this.
Mine is early 2011 and is still tip top except for the battery.
Down to 60ish % health and is only giving me around 3+ hours on a full charge.

My 2009 MBP has never had an issue, either for the original owner or myself. I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB and the HD to 500GB, both problem-free.

I am itching for a newer machine but that's only because I would like a faster processor. This machine currently does everything I need it to do, very well, and runs 12 or more hours a day.

My '06 is ready for it's 4th battery. I may try some cheap knockoff this time around since it stays plugged in and sits in my entertainment center.
