Yellow Triangle in iMovie because of missing clips

I backed up all my videos on my external hard drive, and deleted those on my laptop. Many of the iMovie projects that include those clips show a yellow triangle. Is there any way for me to fix this problem?

How did you back up the clips to the external drive? Did you do it from within iMovie, or did you just drag and drop from Finder?
