Mac OS malware

I was only a matter of time.. but here it is..

a worm spreading via instant messanger.. it may not be too much of a hazard, but now mac users can't say they are immune to viruses.. Its a sad day indeed

yea but it still asks for your password and tbh if your stupid enough to do then you really dont know anything about security. Plus there is already a thread about this

It's not a virus when you have to run it yourself by uncompressing an archive, then opening a file and then give it your password. This kind of malware is not new; all that's new is the maliciousness of that guy who posted the file pretending it was screenshots of 10.5 and the stupidity of not having file extensions enabled to see what really is and what really isn't a jpeg file.

The problem here, it is a trojan horse. The media are at it again, calling it a virus, and a worm. It is neither, by definition it is a trojan. Most Apple users know that you don't give the admin pass word to look at a jpeg. A lot of new users of Apple may get burned, but they may not be interested in OS 10.5 yet.

Yes, the real moral of the story here is that even if this isn't a very malicious program and it requires a total moron to make it run, all Mac users shoud protect themselves from this sort of stuff by:

1. Turning on file extensions in the "Advanced" part of Finder Preferences
2. Turning on the Mac OS X firewall
3. Don't just enter your admin password for giggles. If you're prompted for the admin password, make sure you know why you're being prompted.

lol it asks you the password, what kind of moron would give it a password to look at a picture
