Brands to consider: Epson, Brother, HP. All three generally support Mac OS X with the latest drivers and are easy to setup especially wireless. I purposely left Canon off my list because of the many problems I have had with their printers. Others may have a different opinion regarding Canon.
As far as consumables go, replacing cartridges with the original type by manufacturer is always going to cost more than using generic refillable types. Nowadays, the generic refillable cartridges that can be purchased from net suppliers for around half the price or in some cases one third, are just as good.
However, if you do a lot of photographic printing, I recommend replacing cartridges with the manufacturer originals for best results.
