My printer recently died and I am looking for a good replacement. Not high volume but looking for good print and lower cost of ownership. Any suggestions? Brands to use or stay away from? All input welcome.

Brands to consider: Epson, Brother, HP. All three generally support Mac OS X with the latest drivers and are easy to setup especially wireless. I purposely left Canon off my list because of the many problems I have had with their printers. Others may have a different opinion regarding Canon.

As far as consumables go, replacing cartridges with the original type by manufacturer is always going to cost more than using generic refillable types. Nowadays, the generic refillable cartridges that can be purchased from net suppliers for around half the price or in some cases one third, are just as good.

However, if you do a lot of photographic printing, I recommend replacing cartridges with the manufacturer originals for best results.

Be aware some printers like my Epson TX550W use special cartridges and non genuines simply will not operate.

I received the same message the first time I used a non genuine Epson cartridge in my Epson all in one color printer. However, there is an override on the Epson panel and will ask: "Are you sure you want to use these cartridges."? Reply yes on the panel and you're all good to go.

Check your printer Harry to see if if has the same override option.

LOL, yeah I forgot to mention SamDung. Several years back I purchased a Samsung laser printer for our Windows machine. It lasted one day before I returned it to Best Buy. It was the absolute worse laser printer I ever used. Nothing worked right, and that was in Windows yet!

But I'll tell you what, they sure make some nice looking refrigerators and wash machines. :p
