I only have HP printers so this may not apply to all.
After a format and install of Mavericks on my Mini, the printing to both lasers was unbelievably slow, especially with a PDF or Google Maps, taking up to five minutes per page. I did all the usual and deleted the printers (although the new install did that, obviously) and reinstalled. Still no good.
But a person identifying himself on IRC as a HP employee sent me the simple answer. Go to Apple and get the new HP driver package and install. Then to to System Preferences, Print and Scan, then right click on the printer in the list box. Then select Reset Printing System... Reboot.
It would have taken me quite a while. I didn't even know that the Reset Printing System function existed.
Thanks to the unknown person at HP.
