Microsoft Ends MSE for XP

Microsoft has decided to no longer allow MSE to be installed on Windows XP systems nor will any updates be provided to those who already have it installed.

If you're running Windows XP in a dual boot configuration or from a Virtual Machine, it would be a good idea to find another AV package to use. There are some which are free including AVG, Komodo, Avast, and several others.

You may also want to use this chance to upgrade your XP install if you can - XP is much too old if you don't absolutely need it.

Not so surprising with Microsoft admitting MSE is failing miserably.

This just means that we will be on an Internet with millions of downgraded XP machines firehosing spam and malware. The users who haven't switched or upgraded are unlikely to do so. I assume that they don't care as long as their machine connects, or they know nothing about technology beyond the icons. Lots of people in that last category.

I find it funny that Microsoft is doing their damnedest to try to get people to upgrade using negative reinforcement like this, particularly when it will just cause exactly the situation cptkrf just described. Here's an idea... why not try to entice users to upgrade by offering a truly superior product, rather than just more lipstick and mascara (and in the case of Windows 8, intentionally hobbling the UI to try to make a PC something it is not).

Personally, I find it reprehensible that Microsoft continues to push this EOL baloney with products that they continued to willingly sell up until as recently as 3 years ago. They should determine EOL schedules based on the date of the last copy sold (and before you say it, I realize Apple is guilty of this too and wish they would adhere to the same standard).

Well, it looks like Microsoft has had a change of heart. According to InfoWeek, they've delayed the killing of MSE until July 14th of next year (2015).

Not a whisper about VP whatshername who announced MSE is failing so get out!

MS is in a really awkward spot. The continued use of XP suggests that MS has to keep offering some level of support but that just prolongs usage. Something along the line has to give and it isn't going to be the users.

There are a very large number of people here in France that still use XP. Just about every business you go into with a screen visable uses it. Doctors, dentists, builders merchants, etc. They won't upgrade because their programmes won't run on the newer OS levels.
