I was successfully scanning from a Canon D420 to my mid-2012 MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.5) awhile back, but tried to today and cannot get it to work. When I select the printer and click "open scanner" the gray scanner box opens, but the "Scan" button remains gray and non-functional. The printer is connected via USB cable and turned on and in scan mode.

I did the following several times:

1. Reloaded two drivers from Canon: Mac_UFRII_Ver1030_02 and Mac_ScanGear_V210(1).dmg

2. Deleted and re-added printer.

It has been a long time since I first scanned from this printer and I do not recall doing anything different than what is described above, but I must be missing something somewhere.

Any ideas?

Rick

You mentioned everything worked fine "a while back". You updated your OS since then. You mentioned 10.8.5. Still running 10.8.5...or did you upgrade to 10.9?

Yes, still using 10.8.5. I first scanned with this printer about 6-8 months ago. I do not have a very frequent need to scan.

Is this the printer we are talking about?:

How long have you had it (or how old of a model is it)?

When I do some searching...I find that OS requirements/compatibility is 10.2.8 thru 10.6. This of course doesn't necessarily automatically mean that it isn't compatible with newer Mac OS X versions...especially if the manufacturer provides updated drivers. And of course you did mention that you had it working 6-8 months ago with 10.8.5.

A bit of a "head-scratcher"...since it sounds like you had it working a while ago with what sounds like no major changes since then.

Yup, that's the one, Image Class D420. I have had it for a long time, probably over five years. (Long as in electronic age). And you are right, this is a head-scratcher.

Something clearly must have changed, but with the extended time between scans, it is awfully hard to try to figure out what the possibilities are. If I was scanning daily or weekly, I might have a clue.

Whoops, updated from D402 to D420.

For what it is worth Rick, with my Epson instead of using the Scan button as previously prior to Mavericks, which advised USB error, had to go into the Application Folder, select Epson software, open, double click Scan there and away it went.

You got me thinking, Harry. I found the printer software disc and downloaded it. Unfortunately, it does not seem to have helped.

No files related to the printer show up under Applications.

There is a connection missing here somewhere preventing the appropriate elements from talking to each other.
