iPod shuffle won't register

Hi, apologies if this has been covered, but couldn't find a relevant thread. I've just bought a new gen4 Shuffle, and it won't register on my Mac (running OSX10.8.5) No icon on desktop, nothing in Finder, no mention or icon in iTunes. I've downloaded latest iTunes, restarted to comp, tried in different USB ports, but nothing. Am I missing something? I bought the new Shuffle because after 4 or 5 yrs the same thing happened with the old one. Now I'm thinking it's a computer prob, not an iPod one. Any suggestions?

First thought would be to ask if you're still using the old cable?

Thanks bobtomay - have found out that it's nothing to do with the Shuffle or the cable, it's the Mac Mini. The USB ports are dying. The 2nd has just gone dead. Have tried PRAM reset but no good.
