I'm going to buy a new 1TB HDD for my MBP. However, I don't even know where to begin looking at them. I can only spend $150, and want to buy the best one possible withing that range. Any help at all would be great!

Thank you very much,
stfnhill

Still recommend the WD Black - largest in a 2.5" is 750 GB - should be able to find it for about $75.

Next would go with the WD Blue - do have a 1 TB - slower than the black at 5400 RPM - also quieter and runs cooler - can probably find one for $70-80.

Get a new external for backup with the rest.

Well, not sure that there is a 'best' external HD? But what ports are available on your MBP - I have the spring 2013 model w/ USB 3.0 & Thunderbolt ports. I bought two (also have an iMac) Seagate USB 3.0 1 TB drives (under $100 each) to run Time Machine on my computers. Western Digital is also a recommendation and about the same price. Now these are platter HDs and not SSD, which would be quite expensive!

I would suggest looking on Amazon just to see 'what' is available and for review of the comments. More recently I bought an external HD from OWC (Other World Computing) which is often referenced in this forum - a 1 TB model for about $120 - partitioned and used to 'clone' my 2 computers w/ CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). Of course, there are plenty of other online sites, like New Egg, etc. - I'm sure others will 'chime in' if not already as I'm typing - good luck and please come back w/ further questions, as needed. Dave :)

So first off, my new HDD definitely needs to be 2.5", right? And I have the 3.0 USB's and the Thunderbolt input. And I wish I could afford a 1TB SSD!

Depends:

My recommendations above were "assuming" you wanted a new internal drive - which does need to be a 2.5" drive.
Your external ports have nothing to do with replacing the internal drive.

An external can be just about anything you want it to be.
I don't have a pick for a best external drive - there are lots of good ones out there.
Just look for USB 3 or TB drive and read some reviews - Amazon is a good place to read reviews.

Sorry - I misinterpreted your OP, so follow Bobtomay's sage advice; but yes the laptop will take only a 2 1/2" internal drive. Good luck in your selection. Dave
