.... my avatar.

The old one no longer reflects who I am or what I do and since I started preparing for the 2015 Angling Championships in Belgium, the timing is right.

Cheers ... McBie

What do you do to prepare for a fishing championship - other than spend a lot of time fishing - oh, the life...

You prepare for recreational fishing by practicing your lying and beer drinking technique. I would imagine Championship Fishing would imply higher levels of both . . . ;D O:)

Guys,

Angling is a very serious sport :D where like ski-ing, the Après ski is equally important as the actual sport..
We Belgians don't call it beer drinking, we call it socialising or team building .... or something.:Angry-Tongue:
So 2015 is still a long way away and this year will be all about training ( for both activities )

Cheers ... McBie

Wouldn't really be lying.

Well, perhaps just a small exaggeration about the one that got away. ;)

No no no - I meant to say "No brag, just fact".

Having been to Belgium several times, I noticed that eating & beer drinking are high on the list of 'national sports' - frittes are some of the best in the world although we seem to be improving in the USA.

But just curious - in Belgium do you compete in streams and/or lakes; AND what are the main game fish there?

Dave :)

Dave,
Competition is focussed on lakes and canals, with bream, carp and roach as the main specimen to target.
Not big but many :)
Belgium is indeed beer paradise but we hardly notice it because we grew up with it and sometimes we take a lot for granted with regards to the beer heritage we have. There are indeed a few very nice beers.
Next time you are over here, let me know and I will give you some pointers.

Ahhh...you must be a Roach Pole man then....50ft piece of multi-section graphite with some elastic, a float, line and hook on the end. I never did try one unlike your beers though...I am partial to the odd Duvel Blonde 8.5% abv with some cheese and biscuits however :)

I'm a fly-fisherman myself but best of luck in the championships...are they your Nationals?

Pendlewitch,
Unfortunately I can not compete with the nationals, they are beyond my technical capabilities.
( I have no sponsor :)
Duvel is great. ( Duvel in Dutch means Devil in English ) :)

I have tried fly fishing a couple of times and quickly discovered that this is a league of its own. The finesse you need to cast a 0,00002 gram bait accurately is a skill and has my utmost respect as a fellow angler.

Tight lines.

Hi again McBie - OH yes, the canals - we loved our day trip to Brugge and the boat tour (had a young male guide who did it in 4 languages - impressed!). Some of my favorite food was a large cold shellfish platter (for two), eels in green sauce, and mussels w/ frittes, but there was much more.

I cannot recall a Roach fish (must be some other names?), but who knows we probably ate some when there - believe that I ate only seafood in Belgium. Thanks for the info - Dave :)

A bit (OK a lot) off topic, but back in 1999, 5 of us from my cycling club went to Belgium to see the Ghent 6 day. We went in to a bar (which looked like someone's front room to be honest) and were introduced to Duvel.

The rest of the weekend was a haze apart from having a gun pointed at us by some police on the Saturday night and looking for our dear friend Carl (who is no longer with us - RIP mate) who had never had a drink before that night and went missing for several hours.

Never, ever again will I drink that beer

Good luck with the fishing.

Dave,
Brugges is without a doubt the most beautiful city we have in Belgium, especially since the city is now for 90% free of cars.... back to the medieval ages, which was the era that Brugges played a major role in the history of Belgium and The Netherlands.
That was also the city where the Flemish guys started to kick the French out of Belgium in 1302. Anybody walking the streets those days were asked to pronounce " Schild en vriend " ( Shield and friend ) and if you could not do that properly, they had your head on a plate ( literally ).
So much for civilisation :)

HAHA That attached Image of the White Pointer was taken at a local beach. We get them a lot over in the West, but yea, mum told the Kids it was a friendly Dolphin lol Crack up

Ohhh good luck, my fishing is with a hand reel thick 70lb line and a 300gm sinker and over board she goes. I need that much weight because there is a hole i know of, and if you don't get down past the 10-20kg Jewies, you won't get that 100kg Groper . . . Some friends use a spear gun to get their line down there is that many BIG fish in this special hole that only a few know of, and have handed down to the next Generation . .. 100kg groper isn't out of the question.

Hahahahaha.....there are plenty of 100kg Gropers where I live....you just don't need a spear gun to catch em. A glass of Duvel and a few sweet nothings in the ear normally does the trick :)
