Depending on your Mac, you can upgrade freely to Mavericks. This upgrade can be huge depending on what apps you use since Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is the last version of OS X that supports PowerPC applications.

You will have to provide more information about your Mac and your programs to get more specific answers..

Silver M1 iMac 512/16/8/8 macOS 11.6
There are quite a number of 20" iMacs. Some will run Mavericks and other Lion OS X.7 is the maximum. As RazOrEdge said specs specs specs.
