OK folks..... First post in our new Security Awareness Forum:

PC Magazine recently posted an article listing the best free Anti-Virus software for 2013 along with some testing results. Makes for interesting reading especially for those of you who are running Windows on your Macs or may have a Windows box that you're still using at home or at work.

The link to the article is here.

Free version of BitDefender on my Dell Latitude. Used to be MSE but we saw that go down the ole gurglar which was a pity as it was easy to update and run.

Yeah, kind of a shame Harry that MS let go development of MSE and now has recommended other sources. Maybe they were getting tired of the blame put on them for the myriad of viruses that attack Windows. Removing infections from Windows boxes is still the number one "fix" when one of them goes into the shop for repairs.

I always found it kind of amusing/weird that the company that INTRODUCED the issues that CAUSE viruses in the first place had to make an "anti-virus" ... and did a decent job with it! ???

My issue with McAfee and Norton is slowing down the OS a lot and sucking resources.

It's really too bad MS dropped the ball with MSE. When CWA here on the forums recommended it to me is was a solid product and I was so impressed it did not suck the life out of my machine also!

I am running OSX 10.9.1, I have tried Sophos and found it non intrusive, but it never had a virus problem.
I have uninstalled it and now run with no AV protection and have had no problems.
I feel that one only needs AV protection if running Windows alongside as chscag pointed out.

Thread was for Windows machines only originally. Sophos will not find a virus for OS X as there are none at this stage. it will be world headlines if it happens.
