Mac is running slow?

Hi im just wondering what i could do to speed up my macs performance because it seems like its running slow then it should be

OS X version 10.9
Processor 2.93ghz intel core i7
Memory 8gb
Graphics ATI radeon HD 5750 1024mb

Launch the ActivityMonitor.app, select CPU tab.
In View menu, make sure you select " All Processes "
Sort the screen by %CPU and that will show you what processes are burning your CPU cycles.
( Assuming your slowness happens across all applications )

How much free space do you have on your hard drive ?
