I'm going to be away from my home for 3 1/2 months and was wondering if i should unplug (shut off power) to all my computer equipment. I have Imac, TimeCapsule, Frontier modem and battery backup. Looking for some advice.

Welcome to Mac-Forums.

Yes, it is wise to turn off and unplug all of your electronic equipment if you're going away for extended periods. Depending on your location, you might get power glitches that can short/damage your equipment unless you have surge protectors or UPS' to protect them all.

That's good protection, so it might only be necessary to turn the equipment off, not necessarily to unplug it if you want to rely solely on the protection the UPS/surge protection provides..

When I go on extended vacations, I just unplug everything from the wall..

Tougher for a fire to start or things to get fried with everything unplugged. What is the upside to leaving everything plugged in for 3 months unattended? There are some excellent reasons like remote access and whatnot...

Unplug it. Surge protectors only work to a limited extent. A good air gap (unplugged) is thousands of times better than a surge protector. I would even unplug the UPSs, to protect them as well.

Yep, a lightning strike can take out an UPS or mess it up to the point where it will no longer function properly.
