Running Mavericks I imported a dfont file of musical symbols into the Font Book but I can't find them in the Character Viewer where I understand they should have ended up.

As far as I know, imported music fonts or any other fonts you import will not show up in the character viewer. Fonts imported via your Font Book app are only going to show up there and in your user fonts folder.

There may be a utility which can import special fonts or emoji fonts into the character viewer. I haven't looked for one though.

Looks like that might work. Give it a try and let us know.
