I have a Windows 5th gen iPod that I need to authorize to a new iMac.

The iMac says it cannot read or write to the iPod .

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

What is a "Windows 5th gen iPod"? How have you been sync'ing this iPod thus far? If you have the content saved (or transferred) to the iMac already, you might want to try resetting the iPod to factory settings and then sync'ing fresh to the iMac..

Is this item really even an iPod?
