According to the folks who are familiar with all iterations of the Mac Pro, your model can only run Lion OS X 10.7.5 as the latest version of OS X. It's simply because the firmware on your machine is 32 bit even though the CPU is 64 bit. I don't know of a work around but perhaps one of our Mac Pro guys might.

Yes...no way a 1st gen. Mac Pro will run Mavericks (OS 10.9). It can't even run Mountain Lion (OS 10.8).

Time to upgrade...or be satisfied running Lion (OS 10.7) like chscag mentioned.

I had heard that there was a method out there to do this but hadn't gotten around to trying it. Never really wanted to risk my system on the off chance it might work. One downside to many of these types of hacks is that as revisions are made it may stop working (assuming you can get it going in the first place).

I'll leave others to question whether it violates the OS X EULA. Never investigated that far since I would have to replace the graphics card in my rig just to try it.

If you read the comments on your link many have problems turning their Mac Pro 1.1 and 2.1 into Hackintoshes, or hacked Mackintoshes. The risk is if may well fry the logic board.

Thanks for the reminder Harry. I think you may have been the one to point the risks out to me. I thought I had put risk of frying the logic board in my post. Just when I might have been willing to try it the machine blew wither the logic board or power supply.

See Sly the Mac Pro was terrified of being 'Hackintoshed'!

ROTFL

Even that wouldn't have been a cheap fix for me. Unless I misunderstood the directions in that link it didn't work with my graphics card and I would have needed to spring for that. Not sure it was worth the risk since it was no longer my primary machine. Everything I ran on it ran fine on 10.7
