Time Machine will only backup to a Mac HFS+ formatted disk. Additionally, even if the disk is formatted correctly, TM will not backup to it if it has errors. You can verify the disk with Disk Utility which should be in your Applications, Utility folder.

A quicker way of finding out what is wrong is to launch the Console.app from Applications/utilities and in the left hand pane select " All Messages " ( at the top )
Then in the top right hand corner ( where it says String Matching ) type com.apple.backupd and hit enter.
This will filter out all messages related to Time Machine and if you follow these in chronological order, you will find out what is wrong.
This way it is also much easier to detect specific error codes and you can use it as a screenshot and post it back here for more detailed advise.
