It's supposed to tell us the ram checked out ok. What does it mean when there is no start up noise. The mac pro, early 2010 w/10.8.5 seems ok other wise.

It's really more appropriately called the "startup sound"...or the "boot chime".:)

Do you have the computer volume muted or the volume turned down low? Or do you have external speakers or headphones plugged into the computer?

How good is your hearing? Couldn't resist; reminds me of a joke that I won't tell here.

If the computer works fine after starting up, not having the chime is no great loss. In fact, I'd like to disable it sometimes, but I don't think I can. (OS 10.5.8)

You can lower the volume or disable the chime with StartupSound.prefPane - Arcana Research - StartupSound.prefPane - it works as well as being freeware.

Cheers :)

The Arcana Startup Sound Preference pane is actually the best because it allows you to set the level of sound you want, from completely off to on all the way. Too bad it doesn't work with Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks.

Thanks to all who answered. None of the above suggestions apply. The sound is gone not turned down or off. I use this mac for recording so I familiar with the signal paths for audio available to the OS. I have never had a mac that didn't do the start up noise. This is the first. Bought it used and just want to be sure it's no indicative of something going amiss. I've used macs since the 90s. I think my first was an 8600. That was before the began cheapening the box by summing down the engineering.
That case should have won oscars or the equivalent.
Bye,

It should certainly make the boot chime/sound. One other thing I could suggest is try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.

Even with my volume muted I still get the start up chime.
