I'm ready to set up a new retina macbook pro, and will migrate the data from my older macbook pro by connecting the remote hard drive with latest backup. Should I use the same or different user name for the new machine? I've read some reports about potential conflicts with iTunes migration.

Don't do anything or you'll wind up with an extra account and lots of confusion. Just plug in that new machine and when it asks, respond with copy data from disk, hook up your Time Machine backup and press continue. It will take a while depending on how much data you have to transfer. I just went through the same thing with a brand new iMac. It works well, but again, do not change the user name or create a new account.

Let Time Machine do the work, it does know what it's doing.
