Hi Bill - welcome to the forum! :)

Although you posted in the Mac OS X software forum, are you asking about setting up Mail on a Mac or on an iPad? Sorry not clear to me - please provide more details, and if a Mac, the OS version you have installed. Thanks - Dave :)

If you're talking about iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch), follow the instructions here. If you're talking about the Mac, check this out (assuming you're using the built-in client).

Setting up mail icon

I have an Imac 4, that had a down internal drive.
When they restored it,they put in "MAVERICK X"
an operating system I never heard of.

Mavericks is the current version of OS X, the operating system on your Mac.

As for Mail, follow the Mac instructions I linked to above.

Why does scroll disappear ?

I cant scroll down to the last entry because the scroll bar disappears when I try to use it.
It blinks on , then off after a second or two.

Anyway, I have Gmail -
How do I find out what the incoming and outgoing mail servers are?

It wants me to input those -

GMail setup should be automatic. If you go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > click the little plus button in the bottom left hand corner, there should be an option to set up a GMail account (which won't ask for technical details).
