Scrolling in Document & Application Folders

I have lost the ability to scroll in document, applications and other folders on my mac. Have to use up & down, left and right keys instead. Seems to have happened since installing mavericks. All other scrolling on the web etc is good. Please help.

Not sure if it will help, but you can try the following
In System Preferences / General / Show Scroll Bars ..... if you set this to " Always " will that solve the issue.
If it doesn't don't forget to set it back to the way it was before.

Have tried that and the bar does appear, but I like to use the trackpad to scroll which I used to be able to do. Maybe it's a mavericks thing?

So even with the scroll bar now always visible, you still can not scroll horizontally with 2 fingers on the trackpad.
Is my understanding correct ?

That's correct

That was the only setting I could think off.
Sorry if it didn't solve your problem.
