i was given an ipad 2 recently ,it had a busted digitizer and cracked lcd screen.
i have replace those 2 items, ipad started up and ran fine (after a charge).
kept nagging about ios 7.0.4 update, which i did. it restarted to the "connect to itunes screen, and i could not get past that , so i connected to itunes (updated itunes 1st). itunes downloaded 7.0.4 and proceeded to update, until it fails with an unknown error during the firmware update. this ipad will no longer power up, no signs of charging, pressing home and sleep buttons (for several minutes) does nothing. itunes cant find it, nor do the windows computers (tried 2) . i have access to a older macbook pro (running leopard, updated as far as it will go) i have not tried that yet.

any ideas short of a new logic board?

It certainly sounds like a hardware failure of some sort. Are you near an Apple store that you could take it to and let them check it out real fast? They won't charge you as long as they don't work on it but they can do a quick diagnosis.

i called the nearest one, and they said they would charge $50 (as its not under warranty) to do that. the next nearest one is 140 miles away. its not worth putting any more money into this thing, ill quit while im in it ~100. i can get an ipad 4 for around 300-350 on ebay .

I'm surprised they want to charge you $50 just to check it out. I know of a few folks who had their iPads and iPhone checked out (which were out of warranty) for free. I guess it depends on the individual Apple store.

I have never been charged at an Apple store for hardware diagnostics. I have taken a few devices to them that were out of warranty and I was helped every time.

Thats a new one on me as Apple has always diagnosed free and charged for the actual repair outside of Apple Care .
This sounds more like authorized repair center and not an actual Apple Store.

I thought so too but the OP states it was an Apple Store he called. I'm thinking if he just walked in and asked a genius to check his iPad, it would be done for free.

come to find out they are a apple specialist store and not an true apple store . its a 140 mile trip to the nearest true apple store.
