Arrived at work with my MBP to find when I opened it ... nothing. I had closed it when I left home, like I always do, which put it in sleep mode. Got to work, opened it and had to hold down the power button several seconds to get the front light (the one that blinks slowly when it is sleeping) to go off, then repush the power button to get it to boot. I was greeted with the folowing crash information below. This is a 15" macbook pro, early 2011, i7, 16Gb mem, 1TB harddrive, with Mavericks installed.

Any ideas? I did unplug a usb drive without dismounting it first while it was in sleep mode. (Please remember I am a recovering Windows user. :) I also noticed that my fully charged battery was now at 79% (I live 30 minutes from work) and it felt quite warm.

Because the crash is in "mds_stores" and you yanked out the USB drive, perhaps it was in a pending write when you suspended and it tried to continue when it woke up and the missing flash drive threw it for a loop.

It's good to eject the USB drives before physically removing, but saving that, you should at least remove the drive when the Mac is on so that it knows and can yell at you..:)

It is almost never worth spending the time troubleshooting a first time kernel panic.

mds is basically the process that indexes your computer for Spotlight - locally or the external.

My guess - and only a guess - the computer hadn't quite gone to sleep and was still attempting to index when you picked it up to go - during which it had some issue reading &/or writing to the hard drive during transport or upon opening not finding the external just freaked out.

Okay, thanks! I know to eject the hard drive. And yes, it "Yells" at me although in a much nicer way since installing Mavericks. I just keep forgetting because on a Windows computer I have never had a problem.

This scared me and I love this laptop so I bet I'll never do that again! Thanks for the help. I really appreciate this forum because everyone really tries to help. I truly appreciate the "there are no dumb questions" attitude everyone seems to display and that is such a plus factor for newbies - of which I am when it comes to Macs and OS X. Hard to find that attitude on a Windows forum....hum....

I agree with Moderator Ashwin, yanking out that flash drive while your machine was sleeping is not a good idea. And it wasn't a good idea to do in Windows either... ;D

And by the way, do you really need to run Sophos AV? Or are you a recovering Windows user who is still paranoid about viruses? O:)

I... And it wasn't a good idea to do in Windows either... ;D

I know...bad habit. In my defense, I always shut down my windows computers so removing a drive is not an issue. I sleep my mac because it is so good at it and then I forget....its not off... just sleeping. I will learn from this.

As to anti-virus....yes, I am paranoid. I take my MBP to work and I have a boss who may have the record for most malware infections ever - 162 in one week and these are not tracking cookies either. Yes, she has up-to-date anti-virus and all programs are kept updated as well. I also have added comodo firewall on her computer now and do weekly full scans which never come up clean. But If I had a dollar for every "I didn't know what the attachment was so I clicked on it" comment... well you get the idea. I am now trying to convince her to not use her company email for every shopping, vacation, whatever site she finds. Baby steps.

I did get her to purchase an iPad and she has started to open her mail on it. Yesterday she forwarded me one to check from her iPad which I looked at on my mac. I trashed it but I let Sopho scan it first and it said it was malware which I assume would have infected her Windows computer. At least she didn't open it there.

I have 18 other computers here at work to monitor and maintain. I rarely have malware on any of them. I keep working with her on how to be safer on the web and with her mail, but I have to remember she is the boss so I have to tread carefully.

So paranoid, yes. Give me time. By then maybe I will have everyone on work on a mac.
