Old 2004 Mac

I have an old 2004 Mac that won't boot anymore. Does it need a new battery and what battery do I buy (number, volt, etc.)?

Wow there are dozens of G4's - PowerMacs, iMacs, eMacs, Minis, PowerBooks so who knows without much, much more information. Also consider the hard drive has gone to drive heaven.

Apart from model include OS and if you have the original system install discs.

I have a Mac G5 and the original install discs (2), as well as a disc marked 10.5.6 "Leopard" that my son made me. I guess 10.5.6 is the last update on it before it wouldn't boot anymore. I tried & I got a message to type in "mac-boot", but that did not work. When I turn it on all I get is a dark screen now and a sound like a jet revving up for take off, but nothing happens. This Mac has the old AMD processor.

It's actually a Motorola PPC processor.

It's actually not acceptable to use an OS disk that someone "made for you. You need a "real" OS install disk. It's very possible that this "made disk" has issues...since that message "mac-boot" is not normal.
