I'm looking at a mid 2009 17" Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz with a 500GB HD and 4GB Ram. The guy wants $500 for it. I'm wondering if this Macbook would be able to run Mavericks without performance issues. What should I be worried about in buying this older Macbook? Thanks for any advice.

I run Mavericks just fine on my 2009 MacBook Pro 2.53GHz with 8GB of ram and 500GB HD .
I would think 500.00 is a great deal.

Be fine if you boost the memory to the 8GB max as osxx has done.

nice machine for $500...

Personally I wouldn't run 10.9, unless there's something you *HAVE TO** have 10.9 to run.
10.8 is multiple times more stable and uses less power, in my experience...

I'd run 10.7 or 10.8 on it, and keep it at that.

Mine has been very stable no beach balls and as for power usage I have not noticed an increase or decrease its the same .
The thing about running older OS's eventually it will leave you behind been there done that .
10.9 seems to handle memory way more efficiently than previous versions and you may find the added apps useful.
