10.8.5 MacBook Pro 17" Mid-2010. It does not matter what I am doing - it will crash. It will crash and I'll restart. As soon as it restarts, and I touch anything, it will sometimes crash! Help! It has been crashing for months but getting worse with each new update. It is now unusable. It isn't any certain programs although it is 99% likely with Netflix, Skype and about 80% likely with Safari but 100% likely with all programs if using the Mac more than 5 minutes or so.

Ram could be failing. To much heat being produced cause kernel panics. Do you have another mac handy to access via firewire T setup. Or are you able to use the original macosx disk to enter disk utility.

Hello lead foot, thank you very much for responding. I bought this Mac used - no maosx disk came with it. I have no other Mac. it crashes even if just started up before it even warms up. It appears to happen when I touch the trackpad (but that is only a sense I have) although the other day it was on and nothing was processing. It just crashed even though I hadn't touched it. geez.

Would it help to show a crash log?

Knowing that you bought this used is important.

- Has it ever worked properly?
- Have you done any upgrading...like adding ram?

Either the macosx was badly installed such as the ram being to small for usage or there is failure with being dropped causing odd bouts. You mentioned the trackpad as a cause. try with a usb mouse to see if the same result happens. When you bought or was given did the seller show the Mac working as you may have a pup. Alternative is to obtain original MACOSX for a fresh install.

Hi Nick, it worked perfectly for the first 4-5 months then it seems that it crashed a few times after an update. Then there was another update shortly thereafter and it crashed more often etc until now, after this last update, it is almost constant.

The ram is 8GB and I have not changed anything on it since I got it. Thank you for assisting me!

The logs might tell us what is causing the crash.

What does it do when it crashes? Kernel Panic? Just shuts off?

Instant black screen then grey screen with strange writing. Then it restarts (but not like it is normal restart - it doesn't play music). When it restarts it tells me it had a problem and asks if I want to send a log to Apple. I do.

I do not know what kernel panic means, my apology. I am new to Macs, switching this year from Windows so I do not even know where to look for any logs. Hopefully it saves them. I send them to Apple (just about) every time it crashes so I assume it stores them as well. Would I see 'kernel panic' if I read a log?

I appreciate your assistance very much.

BTW, a bit of background. This was a business computer (purchased as a spare) that was set aside and not used at all until I purchased it in June. The notes I have says, "we did a full Mountain Lion install, wiping out the drive in the process."

Since then, the only thing I have done is update Java (it said it needed it), attempt to install Silverlight (IIRC, it said it needed it for Netflix). And I think it did something with flash but I don't remember now. Other than that, it is as it was before.

I am just finding my way around in this Mac. I love it. :)

Added … oh, and I always run the OS updates when they tell me to.

The Gray Screen with all that writing is a Kernel Panic. Just so you know.

This is not always the case by the way but a lot of Kernel Panics can be Bad RAM. It could be something else like corruption in the OS or some other hardware. If you go to Applications then Utilities look for Console. Open it and you will find all the Logs. If you can post some here for us.

Please tell me where I would find the logs? Or do I need to wait until it crashes again and then, when it pops up with the log and asks if I want to send it, do I THEN save it somehow?

Hi Leadfoot, I attached a Logic Tech USB mouse. It still crashes even after reboot. I read somewhere and now can't find it, that there is a logic board issue with 17" mid-2010. But if that is the problem, wouldn't it have crashed this same way from the beginning?

I'm frustrated. I fell in love with Mac, happy to switch from Windows. I am HOOKED on my MacBook Pro now and I do not want to power up my windows system. YUK. LOL.

I cannot tell you all how much I appreciate your time. Besides Panic logs, there are examples of OCSPD crash, mrs crashes and Skype hangs. Here is one of the Kernel logs:

Yes, I am using it now, Nick. It is currently being nice … it must know I'm trying to heal it, ROFLMAO. I just remembered two other things I did: I purchased a WD My Book and set up time machine. And I installed something called Synergy so I could use Mac and Windows side by side. As is, I work only wireless not connected to either My Book or Windows. I go attach MyBook once in a while to run a backup is all.

ps i love your dog :)

Looking at the logs, it almost looks like a PRAM and/or SMC reset might be in order...

Thank you XJ. So I searched and found how to reset NVRM/PRM (control-option-P and R. I did it twice to be sure it restarted twice and I got the music.

Then I went to Netflix and crashed. I thought that log, since it was 'pure' would be helpful. I will now search on the SMC suggestion for reset. ps - is there any of this log that I can skip pasting here? It just seems so long and worthless.

I decided I probably don't need to reset the SMC since, upon reading about it, my problems do not fit a single one of the many-listed reasons to reset it. If I am wrong in holding up (and I also didn't want to remove the battery, being complete tech-idiot), let me know and I'll go ahead and try but I would rather not.

oops - this is 15" not 17". Sorry for my error and I hope it does not change things.
