When I click on a doc attachment in Mail on my iPad it opens and I can read it. But if it's a docx it doesn't open. How can I correct ths?

What does it open in? Does that application have support for the Open Office XML format (might be labelled as Office 2007/2010 support)?

I don't know - I'm not told. That's the main problem with the iPad - not knowing what it's doing. I have no idea how to set or change the default application.

Does no-one have any idea how to set or vary the application an iPad uses to open a downloaded file?

I'm not sure about which default application on the iPad will open a DOC file. I'm thinking it may be something like TextEdit. DOCX files open on my iPad 3 but that's because I have Office HD installed. If you had Pages for the iPad installed it would open the DOCX file OK. (Pages is less expensive than Office HD.)

So how does it work? Any application compatible with the file is opened? What if I have both Office HD and Pages installed - which application will be used?

Good question. I don't have Pages on my iPad so I can't test to see which would open a DOCX file, but it would likely be the last of the two that was installed.

If you have two apps which could open the document then you will be offered a choice of the 'default' (probably Pages in this case) or the option to pick from all available apps which could do the job.
