I'll stick with ML 10.8.5 which runs just fine & suits my needs.
Why gamble with Maverick?

Not sure anyone will give you a reason to "gamble". Your OS choice doesn't really impact anyone, which is nice. Choice is good.

This may be an ok plan for now...but what about in 5 years and you're still using 10.8.5??;)

If 10.8.5 is doing everything you need at the moment...great!:) But eventually it won't...and then you'll upgrade.

There are negatives, however. See user reviews:

Of course there are negatives...there are always negatives...and there will always be folks who don't like something. You for instance...said "No Mavericks for me"...but you really didn't say why Mavericks isn't for you...specifically.

I'm basically saying (just like the CNET's review "Bottom Line" statement)...that overall...I think that the majority of folks opinions are positive towards Mavericks.

If Mavericks had 100 new features...I'm sure that if someone looked hard enough...they could find at least one person who didn't like at least one of those 100 features (100 people not liking one different feature each).

Does this mean that all 100 features stink...just because 100 people didn't like at least one of them??...no. Because each of those folks (individually) may have only disliked 1 feature...but liked the other 99.:)

You gotta look at the whole thing...then give it an overall "Thumb's Up" or "Thumb's Down"...or 7 out of 10...or 8 out of 10...etc. Not trash the whole thing for just for a couple complaints.:)

One thing I learned years ago for every product Apple makes there will be iHaters waiting to post all the negative things either by here- say or wild guessing.
I found over the years we eventually have to upgrade to move on with other apps so I learned to adjust to it rather than panic learning at the last moment.
Mavericks for me has been the smoothest with real world sped increase.

Why are people always finding 100 negative things whilst all it takes is to find 1 positive thing ?
Beats me I must say.
Anyway, I have been enjoying Mavericks since the day it came out.

Same here. Besides, I love it when I get stuff for free! When was the last time Microsoft offered any of its operating systems for free?

I agree. As long as the other 99 things are "ok"...or at least things that I would be indifferent to.;)

One super positive thing in each new OS release I think is reasonable (for me). So far from what I'm hearing/seeing...I like:

- the new energy saving features
- the way multiple monitors are managed

As a free upgrade that gives you more apps, improved features across the board, and better performance, there is really no reason not to get Mavericks on your Mac."

Yeah, there is. My Mac won't run it.

Which Mini do you have? Pre Core2Duo or Post?

It's a Core2Duo, circa 2007. I looked into upgrading to ML once, and discovered some little nuance, which I can't remember now, that prevented me from making the jump. I just assume that this means I can't run Mavericks, but I'm not positive. I even bought more RAM and was frustrated trying to get it installed by an authorized dealer, then discovered ML would not run on it anyway, so I returned the RAM.

If you want to run Mavericks...time to upgrade.:)
Yes, I know. I haven't decided that I need it. The main consideration will be sharing Excel files with others using newer Macs and Windows. At this point that still works for me using Office 2004, but I could just upgrade Office, to 2011 I think.

I would leave well enough alone until you get a new or newer machine. You can't run ML or Mavericks on your Mini and if you were to update to Lion, you would lose the use of Office 2004. Office 2011 single install is still fairly expensive. About the cheapest I've seen it for is $90 at certain on line discount resellers.

As a rule, when there is a software version X.Y.Z for anything, I usually wait for Z to be at least a 2. I don't need to be on the bleeding edge, but it's nice to be fairly current when possible. I was running a Mac PowerBook G3 (FireWire, Pismo, 2000 model) on MacOS 9.2.2 until about 2006 when I got a MacBook. :) I love my vintage Macs, especially the PowerBook Duo (1992) and Duo Dock.

I am gingerly approaching the possibility of upgrading from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, having upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and internal boot drive to 1 TB, 7200 RPM, and MS Office: Mac from 2004 to 2011 on my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro.
