Buying a USA phone - using in Australia

Is it possible to buy a phone in the USA that can be used in Australia?
I was thinking of buying outright, online from the US.
I would have to specify the model - can anyone tell me where I can get the different model numbers from?

Tell us which phone you have in mind to buy. If it's an iPhone, the unlocked GSM models should work in Australia with a sim card from a Carrier there.

I would get a IP5s 32gb black/grey.
I remeber looking at the IP5 there were 3 different models.
2 for USa (1 general GSM for your band width(s), the other for (I can't think!) CDMA! well that as well.)
1 for Europe
1 for Australia.
So there were actually 4 different models - I believe.

Unless the GSM bands used in Australia are different than that of the USA, Canada, and Europe, any unlocked GSM iPhone with the proper sim card should work. The CDMA models supposedly will work in Europe with a sim card but I really have no idea if they'll work in Australia. You need to check with your local carrier there to make sure though.
