We're going to need much more detail than that. What contact application? Are you using a syncing service? When did it happen? What did you do just before it happened?
This is the application that came with my mac - the icon is book with an "a" on the front. Just before this happened I was attempting to select a group. When that did ot work out and went back to all contacts, nothing was there.
I do have my contacts on my iPad and iPhone and have I Cloud, in case that helps.

In that case, simply disable iCloud on your Mac and re-enable it to force the app to re-sync the contacts back.
