Hello all,

I need some help.

2 days ago my MBP wigged out. The dock vanished and the system kept crashing. DU reported no problems. I then tried reinstalling Mountain Lion. It failed half way through. When I rebooted I received a message telling me the hard drive had a problem that could not be fixed and needed replacing a S.M.A.R.T error.

I am having trouble getting anything off of the hard drive due to the mac running painfully slow. I am taking it to a data recovery specialist monday.

In the meantime I wondered if anyone had experienced this before, if so what did you do ? Also interested to hear from anyone who has any tips on how I can get my MBP running a little faster so I can rescue some data myself.

Very important as I have clients work on the machine that I hadn't backed up.

The slowdown you are experiencing coupled with the S.M.A.R.T error suggest that the drive is on the verge of failure. S.M.A.R.T errors are usually indicative of failing hardware. I'm afraid there's not much else to do rather than continue trying to move as much data as you can off of the drive.

Hello Slydude

Yes I feared that. Guess I will do my best and hope the data recovery saves most of the data.

1. don't keep rebooting the system - - you'll only make it worse
2. the 2011 MBp had numerous issues with HDD ribbon failures.. you might check on this prior to assuming all is lost...

3. target disk mode is far better an option than booting the system...

hope this helps.
