I just met Mr. Smith his own self (aka Red Green) very recently. Charming guy, very quick-witted and a genuinely funny writer.

Never heard of him, but after watching a couple of his vids last night, I may have to go see him if he tours anywhere close next year.

I use Avast Anti Virus. Not that I am overly worried about getting a virus on my Mac, but I have PC stuff also I need to protect.. But Avast is free and works good for me.

Anyway, about the whole virus thing ... much has been written here about it, but in a nutshell you don't need virus protection for the Mac because there aren't any Mac viruses. We're not completely free of other types of malware (rassumfrackinJAVAmuttermutterFLASHrackinfrackin), but Apple already has an anti-malware called XProtect in place on your system that it updates "silently" as needed, the Mac operates as "stealth" by default, and there are built-in security measures you can take (such as only allowing approved developers' stuff on your machine, not allowing others access to your personal account, etc). For the most part Mac users really don't have to think about this stuff much.

Mostly common sense rules the day. Avoid pirated software (a major source of Mac malware), suspicious OMG YR MAC IS INFECTED ads, the evil and widely-advertised MacKeeper crapware, "view porn with this special codec" and other such trickware. Never supply your admin password to downloads unless you are sure you know what you are getting. Windows viruses (sent in an email, for example) can't harm your machine, though of course if you install Windows on your Mac the Windows install will need the same level of anti-virus/anti-malware stuff you would normally put on a PC.

Yeah it's nice not to have to deal with this stuff much. Welcome to Macintosh.

Funniest Red Green bit I saw was one of his man-to-man talks about going to the bathroom for men over 50. He said it was like a fireworks display--lots of standing around waiting for the show to start, lots of oohs, and ahs during the show and you were never really sure when the show ended. I about wet myself laughing, then I turned 50 and it wasn't so funny...

@ possum lodge 20 Can't believe I missed that screen name yesterday.

As for everyone else all I can say is "I'm a man. But I can change. If I have to . . . I guess."

Not having ever seen Red Green's show, I was at a loss how his name was interjected into this thread. Now I think I get it.

And remember the handyman's secret weapon--duct tape!

Best antivirus? Good common sense and safe browsing practices. And keep operating system up to date using Software Update in the App Store. Since Snow Leopard OS X.6 Apple has released malware rotection in the various updates.
