Hi! I am trying to clean up my iMac in preparation to upgrade to OS 10.8. My question is this: can the downloads in the downloads folder be deleted if the documents and apps therein have been saved to appropriate folders? Or do I have to save the hundreds of downloads that are sitting in this folder!! I am viewing the downloads folder in Finder. Thank you!

Once the applications you downloaded are installed, there is no need to keep the downloaded images in your downloads folder. If you do wish to save those that you may have purchased along with their serial numbers, you can always copy them to an external drive or large enough flash drive for safe keeping.

If you've installed the software/moved the documents, then you can delete the downloads. Drag and drop to the trash, then empty it. One caution: Sometimes new folks install software by error in the downloads folder, or copy a link, but not the actual file, to other locations, so when they delete the downloads, the files and apps seem to disappear. So if you are confident you've actually moved and installed all you want, go for it.

I personally keep every DMG that I have ever used. You never know when you may need a particular version of an app. Many apps don't offer upgrades past a certain version, and its not always easy to find an old version of an app that you have paid for.

So, like already mentioned if you have the space save them along with the appropriate registration info.
